Sixteen

On Friday, Umma says she’ll pick both Leonardo and me up at school, so we don’t have to take our buses home. For the past three days, she’s apologized a million times about forgetting me. I tell her I don’t care, and I honestly don’t. In fact, I tell her, it was nice for me to get to know Calvin better.

“He is a nice boy,” she agrees.

I guess I haven’t seen him around because his mother drives him to school and, also, their house must be one of the more expensive ones, farther in from the gates than ours (but with the Gabilan Tower blinking over them).

“He’s in all my honors classes,” I tell her. He indeed showed up in my math class. I’m not sure Mr. Candy was the most welcoming. He started right away with some factorials and logarithms, having everyone answer when called on. I hate doing those in my head and feel a lot of pressure. Calvin hadn’t even been there for the previous class where we learned this, and yet, when Mr. Candy’s pointing finger landed on him, he answered it perfectly.

“He also reads during lunch,” I say. “For fun.”

“Then follow him and do what he does,” Appa suggests. “He sounds impressive.”
